Sisal plantations in Tanga region to be revamped

The government has assured to revamp the cultivation of the sisal plants in Tanga region which used to be the leading cash crop growing region in the country and even in East Africa. The cultivation of a plant crop has now deteriorated due to lack of expertise that could make it do well at a global market. The deputy minister for agriculture Mary Mwanjelwa said in parliament early this week that the government has started to do the so-called mapping survey to see how it can empower farmers in the region in a move to increase crop productivity. The deputy minister was responding to the question earlier raised by Muheza legislator Ambassador Adadi Rajab who wanted to know plans by the government to maximize efforts into increasing the production of sisal crop which is among the cash crops in the country.  While responding, the deputy minister has also issued a directive to all district council authorities in Tanga region to cooperate with the farmers so as to increase tonnage of production to 1,000 next year.
