Govt assures construction of animal ranches to help pastoralists in Longido district

The government has set aside specific areas on which to construct ranches to be used for feeding cows which are looked after by pastoralists in Longido district which is in Arusha region,  the deputy minister for Livestock and Fisheries Abdallah Ulega has said in Parliament last week. He said that, such a strategic move will ensure that no more cows are dying of hunger bearing in mind the fact that, large parts in Longido district is  a semi arid land and savanna type which during sunny seasons poses a great threat to livestock as pastures gets dry and water sources also dries up.

Abdallah Ulega

Ulega made the assurance during question and answer session when he was responding to a question which was raised by Longido constituency legislator Dr. Steven Kiluswa who wanted to know strategic plans by the government which it had promised of providing specific areas to be used as ranches on which to feed animals. The deputy minister noted that, the preparations for these facilities is in place and when completed what would be required of the pastoralists to do is to take their herds into the ranch and pay Tshs. 10,000/- for each cow that will be allowed to feed inside the ranch throughout for a period of one month. He furrier noted that, the government is quite aware of the contributions widely made by the pastoralists in the country and in view of this, has in whatever way dedicate to provide any help to them as cows have economic importance to the development of the nation. “The move by the government t is to develop livestock sector and in order to achieve its positive ambition, has to work in collaboration with pastoralists al, over the country”, the deputy minister noted.
