Student’s loans is meant for poor students only

President Dr. John Magufuli has reiterated the government stand and clarified that loans which are issued for higher learning students in the country is only for students of poor families and not otherwise. The President made a clarification last week in Iringa when addressing students of Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) which is a constituent part of the University of Dar es Salaam. He noted that, families of affluent parents are not supposed to be given loans for their children when seeking for the admission to join studies in higher learning institutions in the country.

He stunned students who turned up to listen to his speech when he said even his children, or any minister’s children including children of Regional Commissioners all of these types are exempted according to the law. However, he further noted that there is a committee formed by the Higher Learning Student’s Board (HELSB) whose task is to verify the educational background of all applicants since they started standard one up to present and see who is liable for that. He also said whoever shall not be satisfied by the decision made by the committee, has the right to appeal. He said up to now statistics shows that, about 130,000 students of higher learning institutions benefits from the loan issued by the government to the tune of Tshs. 427 billion.
