Miss Tanzania beauty contest to continue unabated, says the minister

THE Government has said that, it will not stop the Miss-Tanzania beauty contest whose competition was revived in the country since the second phase of the government came into being in 1985. The Minister for Information   and Sports, Dr. Fenella Mukangara said in Parliament yesterday that, the contestants of the Miss Tanzania have been advertising the government inside and  outside world. She said the contest is part of the women employment which has its significance to the development of the country participants and the country in general. Narrating the benefits of the contest, she said the national beauty contestant represent Tanzania at International beauty contest which is being held annually in different countries in Diaspora. In doing this, the Minister noted that, Tanzania gets an opportunity to hoist its flag from its beauty bearers. She noted that, the government gets the opportunity to advertise their most  attractive natural heritages such as national parks, underground national resources and other visible wealth, such as national parks and others  such as traditional culture and good scenery of the country, just to mention a few to the outside world. She said, apart from the benefits the nation gets, also the  local participants of the contest gets different social training that helps them develops their mindset into becoming more creative. She mentioned such creativities are attained through their artistes activities in various social aspects such as in culture, communication politics and awareness on family planning and change of attitude towards the fight of HIV/AIDS disease.

She said at the moment, such contents have a great productivity to the nation and youths and the community surrounding them and business people especially in the sector of tourism. In view of this, the minister has said that, the government has assured that it would continue organizing the event and through their organizers under the supervision of the National Arts Council who would also continue to strictly observing the rules and regulations set to ensure that the contests are followed with strict orders. The Minister was responding a question by Haroub Shamis (CUF) who wanted to be clarified why the government had revived the Miss Tanzania beauty contest which was prohibited during the first phase government, and what benefits has the government attained so far. In reply, the minister refuted allegations that the contests were prohibited by the government in 1960s, but noted that were suspended for a considerable time and revived in 1994 whereby it introduced new ways and policies on how to continue it. “The Miss-Tanzania beauty contest which is being prepared from the district, regional up to the national level standards have been so productive to the youths in the country” the minister said citing the example of the beauty winner of 2009, Hapinness Magessa whom she said has become so vibrant as she is now doing her businesses in South Africa and the USA.
