Government to build secondary teachers’ houses

THE Government has disbursed a total of Sh. 11.9 billion to various local government authorities in the country to be used for the construction of teachers’ houses facilitated under the second phase of the Secondary School Development program (MMES II) conducted between 2010 and 2013 respectively. This is the government’s support in its initiative through its plan to promote education in the country by allocating its subsidies for the development of local government authorities in the country so as to cater for various social needs with priority given for teachers’ housing in various secondary schools in the country. The deputy minister In Prime Minister’s office in-charge of for Local Government and Regional Administration, Agrey Mwanri said in Parliament yesterday that most government secondary schools have benefited from the program. He said through the program the government has seen the need to allocate the money for the construction of teachers’’ houses as important investment bearing the fact that, teachers are working in extremely hard conditions. Minister Mwanri was responding a supplementary question by Mwigulu Mchemba (CCM) who wanted to know plans by government in its program to develop construction of teachers’ houses in various secondary schools in the country, as well as how it has executed the program so far. He said, under the program, the government has seen the need to invest in education by creating good environment for newly recruited secondary teachers in various schools in the country as an important aspect of teachers’ investment. Earlier Dr. Hamisi Kingwangalla (CCM) Nzega, had wanted to know haw far the government had gone in  its efforts to construct such teachers houses in four secondary schools in his constituency namely  Budushi, Umdomo, Shigamba and Milambo Itobo. In reply, Minister Mwanri said that, the government has already disbursed Sh. 420 million and kit has already in plan to send other Sh. 105 million to accomplish the program in  Nzega district council for the 2013/14 financial year targeted for the construction of teachers’ houses.
