Govt to empower COSOTA to help Tanzanian artistes
The government has formed a committee composed of professionals who will
go through and scrutinize artistes’ contracts as well as their performed works and
thereby issue them with licenses. The deputy minister for Information and Culture, arts, youths and sports Juliana
Shonza said in Parliament on Monday this week that, the aim is to avoid duplication of some of their works being
dome by unscrupulous traders who want to become richer through their works. Under
the process, the governments has also come up with the idea of empowering
Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA) and make it work under the ministry of
information so as to give it full mandate to look after the welfare of artistes
in the country.

The deputy minister said that, currently artistes in the
country have been faced with lots of challenges as most of them have been
loosing their rights of copyright out of the various performances which they
play on stages bearing in mind the fact that, this is their employment designed
to advertise Tanzania even abroad. The deputy minister was responding to the
supplementary question which was earlier raised by special seat legislator
Martha Mlata (CCM) who wanted to know how the government help to control the
artistes’ works in the country. Earlier a special seat legislator Aisharose
Matembe raised a question that was directed to the ministry of Information and
wanted to know when will the government fully plan and integrate its activities
with the rural cultural officers in local government authorities. Responding to
this question the deputy minister said that, her ministry is working in close
cooperation and in collaboration with the local government ministry to
coordinate all matters concerning with the activities being performed by the
cultural officers in the district.
