Electronic smart cards to be used for access through Kigamboni bridge

FROM THE PARLIAMENT IN DODOMA

Access through a famous and a modern flying bridge across the Indian Ocean which links the Dar es Salaam archipelago and Kingamboni suburb is expected to be facilitated by use of the prepaid electronic smart cards to be designed on weekly, monthly and bi-monthly basis , the parliament was informed on Monday this week. Currently motorists of all different kinds including motor bike and bicycles which passes across the bridge have to pay cash in order to get services with the exception of pedestrians who move freely without paying anything through their walkways.

The Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office responsible for Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour and Employment, Antony Mavunde said on Monday this week in the parliament during question and answer session.  The deputy minister was responding to the question which was earlier raised by the special seat legislator Zainabu Mndolwa Amir (CUF) who wanted to know how much has been collected as fee from motorists which crosses the Kigamboni bridge since its inauguration in April 2014. Responding to this question, the deputy minister told Members of Parliament that, Tshs. 19.7 billion has so far been collected by the investor which is the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). He said that, NSSF invested in the bridge by using money contributed by its members most of whom are employers from the private companies.  The legislator raised a supplementary question later and wanted to know why the government should not stop fees charged by NSSF. The deputy minister noted that the fees will not be suppressed as this is an investment made on behalf of the government as well as for the fund’s members and this is happening all over the world.
